Appeal For Money
 | Why we work for Hackney
Hackney is an area of outstanding cultural diversity. The diverse ‘ethnic
minority’ communities make up between a third to one half of the population of
Hackney (depending on which particular sociological
categories are used). Hackney is home to significant African, Asian, afro-Caribbean,
Chinese, Kurdish, Turkish, Greek, and Orthodox Jewish communities. It is also home to a
long established black British population.
Despite its problems Hackney is a fun place to live and work. Shoreditch with its lively
arts and club scene is fast becoming the ‘Soho of the east’. Stoke Newington
Church Street is fast becoming the place to be seen with an international cuisine that
beats nearby trendy Islington. |
| Without financial support from our trade union we are relying on
voluntary assistance from a local law centre and a sympathetic barrister who is prepared
to assist in preparing the case at a reduced fee. We have a fighting fund and would gladly
accept small donations from individuals and labour and trade union organisations
|
| Despite the contempt with which we are treated by our employer, many
staff are proud to work for the borough. Some of us were born here, many of us live here.
We live on the estates, our children go to the schools, and our friends, family and
relations rely on the services delivered by council staff. For those who live in the
borough, Hackney is our home and service delivery means serving our community, a concept
that may be alien to our senior managers.

| Appeal for messages of support
Taking an employment tribunal claim is time-consuming and difficult. It is also
complicated and something that none of us have ever done before. We would welcome messages
of support to place in our regular newsletter, and to place on our web site.

| We are confident that our employer will visit our site, so the more
messages of support we have the less isolated we will feel, and the more the employer will
recognise that their employment practices are becoming common knowledge.
